Welcome to Coffee Dates with Jesus! This is my new devotional series "The Season Where All Things Are New." Grab your coffee, tea, or whatever drink suits your fancy, and let's see what Holy Spirit wants me to share with you. Enjoy!
When I was little and even now, big T-shirts are my favorite thing to sleep in. They're comfortable. There is one obvious, minor detail that has been consistent throughout the years. At 20 years old, I don't wear the same shirt that I wore when I was 5 years old. Why? Because it doesn't fit the way I want it to. I've outgrown it. Every couple of years, I have to buy a new sleeping shirt because it either doesn't fit the way I would like it to anymore, it's old, or both. This is true for everyone. There are some things that fit us in the past that don't fit us now nor do they serve us as they once did.
For example, the same clothes that you wore when you were 19 don't serve you the same way in your 40s. The same clothes that a person wore when they were 5 don't serve them the same once they enter their 20s.
How many of us have clothes in our closets that don't fit? We've been saying for years, "I will come back to this," but we've been saying that for the past three years. For some reason, we keep it there "just in case."
How many of us have been holding onto things in our lives that no longer serve us? How many things are you holding onto that no longer fit? Those things include people, places, and objects that once had value. You're holding on because of the sentiment that is attached to it, but the Holy Spirit wanted me to share with you that old wineskin cannot contain new wine. You are entering into a season where all things are new, including you.
Luke 5:36-38 says “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins....."
We can't hold on to people, places, and things because of the "just in case I need them," "just in case I want to remember," or "just in case it's valuable one day." If someone, somewhere, or something doesn't fit within the space that God has you in now, it's time to clean out. Is it hard to move on? Yes. Is it worth it? Yes, because God is calling you to a new season with new people, new places, and new things.
Prayer: Father God, I thank you for the newness that you are bringing to me. Anything or anyone that is no longer serving me or fitting in the space you have prepared for me, Father I thank you for sending Holy Spirit to give me the wisdom on how to remove them. Thank you for the grace to walk through this season. Thank you for the courage to clean out.
In Jesus' name,
Amen
Devotional Question:
What have you been holding on to that no longer serves you or no longer fits within the space God has placed you?
Tune in next week to see the significance of learning how to make room for the "new."
